Photos from Bisbee

DAVENPORT GALLERY

The Davenport Gallery opened last Saturday just a block from my studio. It is a cooperative. The work of the 10 or so artist is strong and varied. The display space is first rate. The gallery is located on Highway 1, in Davenport next to the Roadhouse restaurant (davenportgallery.net).

Return from Bisbee, AZ

I returned from my visit to Bisbee by way of LA a week ago. The time in Bisbee was is much of an inward journey as a roadtrip.
I enjoyed visiting my friend Scott in LA at his studio were we both enjoyed our conversation about painting. His paintings are masterfully done. The content especially with regards to his figurative work seem almost like stills from a film or video. He captures a moment, a fraction of a section. There is a mystery about the moment. He draws you into the drama leaving questions unanswered.
I visited my sister-in-law and her daughter in Laguna Beach were we caught up on personal and family related matters.

In Bisbee I spent my time with my dear friends who are artists and who also are opening a restaurant in February, 2010 (screamingbansheepizza.com).
I literally and figuratively went into the desert. I took photographs and laid my canvases out in the sand of the desert and intuited my way through them. I was looking for some clarity away from the visual noise of my studio here in Davenport.

This Wednesday, I am driving to Bisbee by way of LA for a month in the desert where I will paint, draw and take photos. I should return mid-December.

Open Studio – A Success

Open Studio was a great success on so many levels. Did I sell anything? “Yes”, but more importantly were the visitors. An old friend from 35 years ago and his wife came up from LA and spent a large chunk of the first Saturday visiting. It was wonderful seeing him again and meeting his wife. Some friends from Bellarmine made the drive down from SJ. Many local friend and strangers came by as well. A true gift to me. One visitor in particular was and 8 year old who wanted her mother to bring her to my studio because she is interested in abstraction! She was wonderful. Her questions were so insightful. It was lovely, inspiring.

Open Studio, Oct. 3 – 4

A great success.

Oncore Weekend, Oct. 17 – 18 from 11AM – 6PM

going with the urge

Even though my small paintings are more accessible to more people I have this urge to start my next painting on a 48″ X 48″, canvas. I am going to have to go with the urge.

Here is the result of that 48" X 48" painting.

Here is the result of that 48" X 48" painting.

Being able to dedicate myself and my energy fully to my work has been a god-send.

Trip to Bisbee

To get away from the smoke from the fire and to visit Kerri and Christi before the restaurant opens, Franny and I drove to Bisbee, AZBisbee is quite the artist community.  Rattlesnake Ranch was wonderful.  I stopped into SAM-POE Gallery and talked to Poe about his sculpture.  I told him about my idea of coming to Bisbee for a month at a time to paint in the desert.  He said that his wife has a camper in the desert and that I may want to join her on my next visit.  I think that I would.
This is my second year participating in the Santa Cruz County Open Studio.  I have quite the To Do list.  At the top, I need to talk with some of the other artists from the Davenport area to see if we can pull our resources regarding publicity, then the announcements and the mailing.
My new work is fresh; a combination of rich color, texture (drawing from the tube), and Aboriginal-like patterns.  My trip to Australia still has its effect on me.  One painting is 1 foot wide by 8 feet high.
