My paintings are rooted in Abstract Expressionism. I studied with the second generation New York Abstract Expressionist, Edward Dugmore, who himself spent two years as an assistant to Clifford Still.
My approach to painting is intuitive. The mark, the energy behind the mark and its relationship to the rest of the composition (line, shape, texture, value and color) is the language with which I am most at home. I usually have no preconceived notion of how the painting will look. I use no sketches. I paint directly onto the surface allowing the painting to evolve into a working composition. When it feels finished, I stop. As John Updike said, there is only one rule – does it work?
Recently, my paintings have begun to take on a more systematized compositional structure suggesting architecture or surrealistic landscapes.
